John Farrell
During the 2010~2011 MLB offseason, finding THE new manager for the Toronto Blue Jays was kind of a big deal (well, in the Blue Jays blogosphere anyways). The Jays fans, by which I mean the Jays bloggers, were enthralled to get a manager who maybe wouldn't sit on his butt relentlessly through every game coughCitocough. Speculations were made, discussions arose, and maple boners were induced. Sometime in October of 2010, Anthopoulos, the GM of the Blue Jays who is also the second coming of the Messiah, chose John Farrell, the pitching coach for the Boston Red Sox, to be the new manager for his club. The fans, including me, were delighted, as Farrell's reputation was held very highly by those in MLB
Fast forward six months, and now the decision to make Farrell manager doesn't seem quite as good.
I understand that he's a first time manager. I understand that its only 50 games in. I understand that the Jays are .500. Yes, I probably am making too big of a deal out of this. But I can't help it.
I die a little inside whenever Escobar shows bunt with men on 1st and 2nd. Even worse is when Patterson steals second during a Jose Bautista at-bat. My heart rate jumps whenever Johnny Mac(!), Juan Rivera (!!!), and, for fuck's sakes, Jose Fricking Molina (!!!!!!!) try to steal bases. WHY. Please spare me the agony. I don't think all of this is you, Farrell, but you're the fricking manager. If players make dumb decisions, it's your job to stop them or drop them. Jeeeeeezus.
I watched many videos of Farrell doing interviews, and he seemed and sounded quite smart. "Maybe he won't be Gardy v 2.0, or Ron Wash v 2.0!" .......It was all smoke and mirrors. It's mostly my fault for thinking he was going to be Joe Maddon v 2.0.
I don't think he's the worst manager in the Majors. He's probably another generic manager who mostly have no idea what he's doing. But hey, what do I know? I'm just another blogger living in his mom's basement.
